Total Shoulder Replacement

Dr. Monroe & Dr. Nelson

Chronic shoulder pain can make everyday activities difficult and diminish your quality of life. Often caused by arthritis, rotator cuff damage, or other joint conditions, this pain may not respond to nonsurgical treatments like therapy, medications, or injections.

At Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, we’re proud to offer advanced solutions for shoulder pain. Our board-certified orthopedic surgeons Dr. Emily Monroe and Dr. Eric Nelson specialize in advanced shoulder replacement procedures, helping patients regain mobility, reduce pain, and return to the activities they enjoy.

Our Shoulder Replacement Procedures

Shoulder replacement surgery is designed to relieve pain and restore movement by replacing the damaged parts of the shoulder with prosthetic components. For some patients, a traditional total shoulder replacement is the best option.

In total shoulder replacement, the ball and socket of the joint are replaced with implants that replicate the shoulder’s natural anatomy. This approach is most effective for patients with severe arthritis but a healthy rotator cuff, allowing for restored motion and reduced pain.

For others with significant rotator cuff damage and advanced arthritis, a reverse total shoulder replacement may provide the greatest benefit. This procedure reverses the ball-and-socket joint so the deltoid muscle can take over the work of the rotator cuff. By shifting how the shoulder functions, patients are able to regain strength and mobility that cannot be achieved with a traditional replacement.

Advanced Technology for Precision

At Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, our shoulder replacement surgeons combine specialized training with leading-edge technology to deliver precise treatment and exceptional outcomes. For advanced reverse shoulder replacement, Dr. Nelson uses Eclipse™ and Univers Revers™ total shoulder systems and Dr. Monroe uses the Tornier total shoulder system and Tornier AEQUALIS ASCEND™ Flex. Utilizing 3D modeling and patient-specific planning, these technologies enhance implant accuracy and recovery. With these state-of-the-art innovations, our surgeons remain dedicated to providing every patient with the highest level of care for better outcomes and a smoother recovery.

Is Total Shoulder Replacement Right for You?

If you experience severe shoulder pain or limited function due to arthritis or rotator cuff damage, total shoulder replacement may be an effective treatment. As with any surgery, there are risks and potential complications, and results will vary from person to person. Recovery and activity levels depend on individual health factors, and your doctor will guide you on how to safely maintain your lifestyle and support the longevity of your implant.
