Dr. Eric W. Nelson offers treatment option at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. (Feb. 7, 2014) – Recent advancements in the development of surgical equipment now allow orthopedic surgeons to treat shoulder conditions with a minimally invasive arthroscopic technique instead of an older, more invasive open procedure.

Eric W. Nelson, M.D., shoulder surgeon at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, began performing shoulder arthroscopy procedures 15 years ago, but the surgery technology has improved significantly in recent years, providing quicker, less painful recoveries and smaller scars.

“An arthroscope is a small fiber-optic viewing instrument made up of a tiny lens, a light source and a video camera,” Dr. Nelson says. “Using arthroscopic technology, I am able to easily examine, diagnose and treat injuries and conditions within the shoulder joint without disrupting surrounding ligaments and tissue.”

Shoulder injuries and conditions that can be treated using arthroscopy include shoulder dislocations, rotator cuff tears and labral injuries.
