Meet Penny, a resilient 61-year-old woman who has spent most of her life dedicated to working in the retail industry. Last September, her world was turned upside down when excruciating pain struck her knees, leaving her unable to walk without tears. She decided to seek help.
Turning to her local experts at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, Penny consulted board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Nelson. After a thorough examination, she received a diagnosis that explained her agony—osteoarthritis had taken hold in both of her knees. The pain was particularly unbearable in her left knee.
Together with Dr. Nelson, she opted for a solution that would pave the way for a better life—total knee replacements for both knees using the Mako® robotic system. The first step was taken on December 21, when Penny received a new left knee.
“This was a necessary move to have this procedure, otherwise I would not be able to live a normal lifestyle and be able to work,” Penny explained.
Throughout her journey, Penny found unwavering support from Heartland Orthopedic Specialists.
“The Heartland staff, from doctor and nurses to therapy,” said Penny, “all were always giving positive energy and answered all my questions.”
Penny's left knee began to show signs of progress. With each passing day, her pain lessened, and her movement improved. As the summer arrived, it was time for Penny to take the next step.
On July 20, Dr. Nelson performed the total joint replacement for her right knee. With patience and determination, she tackled the challenges of recovery head-on.
Now, a month after the second surgery, Penny looks ahead with a mixture of optimism and patience. The support of her medical team, the strength she draws from her past successes, and the thought of resuming the activities she loves drive her forward.
“Hoping at the end of October, I will be able to return to work and other functions that I love to do, like camping,” Penny adds.
Today, Penny remains steadfast in her commitment to the journey. Each day is a step closer to her goals.
