Local Mom Walking Well After Ankle Replacement With Dr. Russell Sticha

Michelle F. from Glenwood, Minnesota, had a life-changing encounter with a snowmobile at the age of 19, resulting in a traumatic ankle injury that required extensive surgery. "I had two plates and six screws put in to fix my ankle," she recalled.

Complications arose after the initial surgery, leading to excruciating pain and the necessity of a second operation. She was able to heal well; however, the initial injury led to issues later in her life.

Over the years, Michelle began to battle with chronic ankle pain that progressively worsened, affecting her quality of life. "It was getting worse and worse for five to six years," she recounted.

Fortunately, Michelle was referred to board-certified foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Russell Sticha at Heartland Orthopedic Specialists, who diagnosed her with advanced ankle arthritis. Michelle had apprehension toward surgery due to a previous negative experience, and Dr. Sticha initially suggested cortisone shots to alleviate the pain. However, these proved ineffective, and Michelle found herself enduring discomfort not only in her ankle but also in her knees and hips due to overcompensation.

Determined to find a lasting solution, Michelle opted to undergo ankle replacement surgery, a decision she made after careful consideration. Dr. Sticha performed the procedure at Alomere Health in Alexandria in late November 2022.

Reflecting on her surgical experience, she remarked, "It wasn't bad at all. I could have gone home the same day, but again, I had this fear in my head, and [Dr. Sticha] was kind enough to let me spend the first night there."

During her recovery, Michelle used crutches and a scooter to aid her mobility. By January, she had made a remarkable recovery, regaining her ability to walk and move without hindrance. Now 47, Michelle was Dr. Sticha's youngest ankle replacement patient, a testament to her resilience and determination.

Feeling renewed and free from chronic pain, Michelle has embarked on various adventures, including strolling the Las Vegas Strip last spring. Currently, she eagerly anticipates her son's wedding this summer and looks forward to celebrating the big event without the burden of discomfort.

Reflecting on her journey, Michelle expresses gratitude for the exceptional care she received. "It was amazing. You know, [Dr. Sticha] and his whole staff, they were all amazing, very supportive," she enthused.

Offering advice to others facing similar challenges, Michelle emphasizes the importance of addressing health issues promptly. "If you know you need it, then do it. Because otherwise you compensate and then you'll get problems in other parts of your body afterwards," she said.

Michelle's story exemplifies the transformative power of medical intervention and resilience in overcoming adversity.
